Best of the Web/Best of Digital Competition

The “Best of the Web/Best of Digital” competition is an annual Web and app design contest for members of the Association for Education in Journalism & Mass Communication. There are four categories to accommodate submissions ranging from individuals and small groups to department- and institution-wide projects. Judging will be done by Web and app design professionals and academics with a background in Web and app design and technology.

The competition is offered as a collaboration between the Communication Technology and Visual Communication divisions of the AEJMC.

Submission deadline is April 14, 2017. There is no entry fee. See the Rules page for more information.

What is the Creative Projects Competition?

What work should you enter?

The format is non-restrictive, but an entry must include a strong visual component that would typically appear as “Creative Scholarship” or “Creative Work” on your curriculum vitae. Projects that have been accepted into the Creative Projects competition in the past include: historical studies, visual communication, photojournalism, books and documentaries. Work created between April 1, 2016 and April 1, 2017 is eligible to enter.

How will the work be judged?

The work will be judged by a panel of judges using the following criteria:

  • Relevance to the focus of the AEJMC Visual Communication Division
  • Contributions to professional practice or pedagogical approach
  • Overall strength of the work
  • Clarity and effectiveness
  • Creativity of the work

How do I enter?

OPTION 1: ENTER ONLINE

  1. Fill out an Entry Form for each entry you are submitting.
  2. Your submission should include a one-page explanation of the problem and your solution. You should stress your solution’s significance to the study of visual journalism, as well as any connections to pedagogical approaches or theories.
  3. Create a folder with your completed entry form and no more than four high quality digital images of your entry. Compress the folder and label it with the project name. Upload the compressed file to Google Drive and share it with the Creative Projects Competition Chair. A video tutorial of this process can be found here.

OPTION 2: MAIL IN AN ENTRY

Unfortunately we are unable to return entry materials. Please do not send any work that is in low supply. In addition, all entries must be postmarked by April 1, 2017.

  1. Fill out an Entry Form for each entry you are submitting, and attach the form to the back of the piece.
  2. Your submission should include a one-page explanation of the problem and your solution. You should stress your solution’s significance to the study of visual journalism, as well as any connections to pedagogical approaches or theories.
  3. Please provide one high-quality digital image on a flash drive for each entry submitted.

Acceptable File Formats

Each entry, whether submitted digitally or mailed in, must be accompanied by a digital image. This image should:

  • Be saved as a 72 dpi .tiff, .jpg file, or PDF file
  • Have a dimension of 1024 x 768 pixels
  • Have the color mode set to RGB

AEJMC MIDWINTER CONFERENCE 2015, March 6-7, 2015

The AEJMC Midwinter Conference is an annual forum for the presentation of research and debate in areas relevant to the 10 AEJMC groups (divisions, interest groups and commissions) sponsoring the event. The conference provides a platform for presentations and extended discussions in a relaxed setting.

The upcoming conference is scheduled for March 6-7, 2015 at the Gaylord College of Journalism and Mass Communication (University of Oklahoma) in Norman, Oklahoma. Conference participants will be able to enjoy the College’s state-of-the-art teaching and research facilities, as well as many winter diversions outside the conference activities, including world-class museums and art galleries.

Paper abstract submissions: Authors are invited to submit research paper abstracts of between 600 and 800 words (word count excludes author information and references). Abstracts should give a clear sense of relevant literature, research objectives, methodological approach, stage of research project (conceptual, data gathering, data interpreting), findings and conclusions.

Submissions should be made by e-mail to the midwinter chair (VisCom: Matt Haught, University of Memphis, mjhaught@memphis.edu) of the group authors wish to submit to. Note that authors can submit any specific paper abstract to only one participating group – submitting the same paper abstract to several groups will result in disqualification and withdrawal from the review process. Do not submit full papers.

Authors of accepted papers will be notified by mid-January 2015. Papers presented at the midwinter conference are also eligible for presentation at the AEJMC national convention in August. Authors are encouraged to use the midwinter conference as an opportunity to get feedback on their research to improve and finalize it for submission to the national conference.

Authors of accepted abstracts must submit complete papers (not exceeding 30 pages) to the discussant of their conference session at least two weeks before the midwinter conference. The midwinter chair for the relevant group will send authors the names and contact details of the discussant for their session.

At least one author of each accepted paper must register and attend the conference to present the paper. Failure to register by the deadline will result in authors’ names and papers being removed from the program. NO onsite registration will be available.

Panel submissions: In addition, the organizers are also inviting panel proposals. These proposals should be sent to the midwinter chair of the particular division or group they wish to present the panel to. Panel submissions should include the panel title, a description of the session’s focus, the issues to be discussed, and a list of panelists (potential and confirmed), including affiliation. Panel proposals should not exceed two double-spaced pages.

Submission format: All submissions (for paper abstracts and panels) should include the name(s) of the author(s) or panel organizer(s) on the title page only. The title page should also include the author or lead author’s (or organizer’s) mailing address, telephone number and e-mail address. The title should be on the first page of the text and on running heads on each page of text. Authors should e-mail their abstracts or proposals as attachments (saved with the author’s last name as file name) in a standard word-processing format (preferably Word or RTF) to the relevant midwinter chair. Authors must ensure that they remove any identifying information from their document (with the exception of the title page).

 Deadline: All submissions should reach the appropriate group’s midwinter chair by noon, December 1, 2014.

AEJMC Best of the Web 2013

As Web-based multimedia storytelling has evolved, so has Best of the Web. We have made accommodations for the growing number of CMS and template-based options while keeping the competition’s emphasis on original, innovative, interactive storytelling. This year we have established two categories that will reward the academic intent and scope of entrants’ projects:

CATEGORIES

–Individual or Class Project

All content must be created by an individual or a class with guidance from the entrant’s professor. All elements must be designed by the individual or the class with guidance from the professor of record. University staff or outside consultants may not create content, do any design, or do any coding. Entrants may use widgets and plugins. The use of a template or a content management system theme as a starting point is allowed, but entrants should understand that the judges will reward originality and innovation. The use of pre-designed templates or CMS themes WITHOUT SIGNIFICANT ADAPTATION TO AN ORIGINAL DESIGN is not allowed. If your entry is included in a larger site that includes other projects, please be sure to send only the link to your project.

–School or Institutional Project

This category will consider larger projects created by more than one class at a university, or projects created by more than one university as part of a journalism institute or center. All visual content must be generated by students. The entire project must be designed primarily by students with the understanding that due to database and technical issues outside the scope of a university class, contributions from professors, university staff and outside consultants may be necessary. Entrants may use widgets and plugins. The use of pre-designed template or a content management system theme as a starting point is allowed, but entrants should understand that the judges will reward originality and innovation. The use of pre-designed templates or CMS themes WITHOUT SIGNIFICANT ADAPTATION TO AN ORIGINAL DESIGN is not allowed. If your entry is included in a larger site that includes other projects, please be sure to send only the link to your project.

AWARDS

Judges will consider all entries based on content, design and technical innovation and will decide first place, second place and honorable mention awards for each category, as well as one award of excellence for the best overall entry.

RULES FOR ENTERING

The ONLY qualified entrants for this competition are faculty and students who work for or attend an institution that is accredited by ACEJMC, or are current (paid) individual members of AEJMC and their students. University and college staff are not eligible to be entrants of record.

Individual/Class Project: The entrant of record should be the person who designed and primarily built the site.

School/Institutional Project: The entrant of record should be the supervising faculty member if the entrant contributed significantly to the design and production of the site. All school/institutional entries must be PRIMARILY created by students and faculty and not by staff, paid consultants or professional designers.

DISCLOSURE

1) The entry form will require you to list the names and roles of the students and faculty members who contributed to your entry as well as the names and roles of any contributors to your project who are not students or faculty members. The list MUST include the name and position of any university staff members, designers, developers or database consultants who contributed in any way to your project.

2) The entry form will require you to list the templates, CMS themes, plugins and widgets you used to produce your project.

SITES

All sites entered must advance education or research in journalism or mass communication. Sites unrelated to this field are NOT accepted. Sites must fit into one of the given categories. A site may be submitted only once per year and in only ONE category. An entrant may enter more than one site in a single year. Sites that do not fit the criteria will be eliminated from the competition by the chairs.
